Understanding Autism

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that shapes how a person processes information, communicates, forms relationships, and experiences the world around them. Autistic people often notice details others miss, see patterns others overlook, and think in ways that are creative, precise, and deeply insightful.

Autism is not a behaviour problem. It is not a lack of empathy. It is not something to “fix”.

It is a valid neurotype a different way of experiencing the world.

Autism Is a Spectrum — But Not a Straight Line

Autism does not range from “not autistic” to “very autistic”.
Every autistic person has a unique profile of:

  • sensory differences
  • communication style
  • emotional regulation needs
  • strengths
  • support requirements

All autistic people have strengths.
All autistic people have challenges.
Those strengths and challenges simply look different for each individual.

What Autism Can Look Like

  • Communication & Social Interaction - literal or precise use of language, difficulty with small talk, needing more processing time during conversations, social exhaustion after interactions, preferring deep, meaningful connections
  • Sensory Processing Differences - Autistic people may be hypersensitive or hyposensitive to sound, light, textures, smells, movement, temperature. Sensory overload is real and can lead to shutdowns or meltdowns when the nervous system becomes overwhelmed.
  • Thinking & Learning Style - strong pattern recognition, deep focus on interests, honesty and authenticity, excellent memory for detail, logical, structured thinking
  • Emotional Regulation - may feel emotions intensely, may struggle to explain feelings, may communicate needs through behaviour, not words,

None of these are “problems”. They are simply part of an autistic neurotype.

Autistic Strengths

  • Autistic individuals often demonstrate:
  • loyalty and integrity
  • strong problem-solving skills
  • deep passion for interests
  • creative, original thinking
  • reliable routines and structure
  • fairness and justice
  • attention to detail
  • specialist knowledge
