What is Neurodiversity UK?
Neurodiversity simply means that every human brain is wired differently and those differences are natural, valuable, and part of the richness of human diversity. Just as biodiversity keeps our ecosystems healthy, neurodiversity makes our classrooms, workplaces, and communities stronger. When we understand and support different ways of thinking, learning, and processing the world, everyone thrives.
A Better Way to Understand the Brain
For many years, society focused on what people couldn’t do. Today, we recognise that neurological differences — such as ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Tourette’s, and others reflect diversity, not defect.
These differences influence things like:
- how someone learns
- how they focus
- how they communicate
- how they process information
- how they experience environments
- how they express emotions
No two brains are the same and when we value those differences, we create spaces where everyone feels understood, accepted, and able to thrive.
Neurodivergent vs Neurotypical
- Neurotypical describes people whose brain processes align with what society considers “typical”.
- Neurodivergent describes people whose brain functions differ from these norms.
Neither is better or worse, just different. Neurodiversity includes all of us.
