About Neuro-diversity UK

Understanding people. Changing perspectives. Building inclusion.

Neuro-diversity UK was established with a clear purpose: to make neurodiversity easier to understand and meaningful inclusion more achievable in everyday life.

We believe that understanding neurodivergence involves more than recognising diagnostic labels. It means listening to individual experiences, challenging assumptions and recognising how environments, expectations and interactions can influence someone's opportunities and wellbeing.

Through education, practical resources and professional learning, Neuro-diversity UK works to encourage greater understanding across families, education, youth settings and workplaces.

Why Neuro-diversity UK Exists

Because awareness alone does not create inclusion.

Many people genuinely want to be supportive but are unsure what that looks like in practice.

A teacher may recognise that a pupil is finding something difficult without understanding the reasons behind it. An employer may want to make adjustments but be uncertain where to begin. A parent or carer may spend years trying to help others understand their child's needs.

Across these different settings, a common challenge emerges: the gap between recognising neurodivergence and knowing how to respond meaningfully. Neuro-diversity UK was created to help bridge that gap.

Our work focuses on practical understanding, respectful communication and approaches that recognise individuals rather than expecting everyone to fit the same expectations.

Angela Beattie

Founder of Neuro-diversity UK | Educator | University Lecturer | Neurodiversity Trainer

I have spent more than 35 years working in education, supporting young people, developing teachers and exploring how learning environments can become more inclusive.

My professional journey has included co-founding and running an education organisation supporting young people outside mainstream education. That experience reinforced the importance of looking beyond behaviour, understanding individual circumstances and creating environments where learners feel respected and capable.

I subsequently worked in further education and teacher development, supporting educators to strengthen their understanding of learning differences, inclusive teaching and practical classroom approaches.

My work now also includes teaching neurodiversity-related modules within higher education, connecting educational research and professional practice with the realities people encounter in everyday settings.

Alongside my professional experience, my perspective has been shaped by family life and personal experience of navigating systems where understanding and appropriate support are not always easy to access. These experiences have influenced how I approach neurodiversity education. I believe that meaningful progress begins when we listen carefully, recognise individual needs and move away from assumptions about how someone should think, learn, communicate or behave.

I founded Neuro-diversity UK to bring that professional knowledge and lived understanding together in a way that is accessible, compassionate and genuinely useful.

What Guides Our Work

Three principles shape everything we do.

1. Understanding the Individual

Every neurodivergent person has their own experiences, strengths, preferences and support needs. We encourage people to look beyond labels and avoid assumptions based on a diagnosis.

2. Turning Knowledge Into Practical Action

Information is most valuable when it helps people respond differently. Our approach connects understanding with realistic changes in communication, expectations, environments and support.

3. Creating Inclusive Environments

Inclusion is not simply about expecting individuals to adapt. It also involves recognising and addressing barriers that may prevent people from participating, learning, working or feeling that they belong.

Our aim is to support environments where differences are understood, individuals are respected

and meaningful adjustments become part of everyday practice.
