Neurodiversity Education for Young People

Understanding difference. Building inclusion.

Creating a sense of belonging.

Every young person deserves to feel understood, respected and included, wherever they learn, live or spend their time.

Understanding neurodivergence is important not only in classrooms, but also in youth organisations, community groups, care environments and the many other settings where young people develop relationships, confidence and a sense of identity.

The Neuro-diversity Crew™ is a character-led educational programme from Neuro-diversity UK that encourages young people to explore different experiences, challenge assumptions and consider how their everyday actions can help others feel included.

Originally developed with secondary schools, sixth forms and colleges in mind, the programme's educational themes can also be adapted for other organisations supporting young people.

Who the Programme is For?

Neurodiversity education that extends beyond the classroom.

The Neuro-diversity Crew™ is designed to be relevant across a range of education, care and youth settings.

Schools and Education Providers

Secondary schools, sixth forms, further education colleges, specialist education settings, alternative provision and other organisations supporting young people's learning and development.

Youth and Community Organisations

Scouts, Guides, youth clubs, community groups and organisations providing opportunities for young people to learn, develop friendships and participate in shared activities.

Fostering, Care and Family Support

Fostering services, children's residential care providers and other organisations supporting young people whose experiences and needs may extend beyond formal education.

Youth Justice and Specialist Services

Youth justice services and organisations working with young people who may benefit from accessible, relationship-centred approaches to understanding neurodivergence and individual needs.

Different environments bring different experiences. Our aim is to make neurodiversity education relevant, respectful and meaningful to the young people involved.

What Young People Will Learn?

Looking beyond labels to understand everyday experiences.

Through relatable characters and familiar situations, The Neuro-diversity Crew™ encourages young people to explore four important areas.

1. Understanding Different Experiences - Recognising that people may think, learn, communicate, process information and experience their surroundings differently.

2. Challenging Assumptions - Considering why someone's behaviour or response might be misunderstood, and why what we see does not always reflect what someone is experiencing.

3. Developing Respectful Relationships - Exploring the importance of patience, kindness, communication, personal boundaries and including others without singling them out.

4. Recognising What Helps - Understanding how clear communication, additional processing time, flexibility and thoughtful adjustments can make everyday situations more accessible.

The emphasis is on developing understanding that young people can apply in their own interactions, rather than simply learning diagnostic definitions.

Flexible Learning for Different Settings

One educational approach. Different environments and needs.

The Neuro-diversity Crew™ uses character-led videos as a starting point for discussion, reflection and practical learning.

Depending on the setting, the content could support assemblies, PSHE lessons, tutor time, youth-group activities, facilitated discussions and other educational sessions. The same topic may be explored differently depending on the young people's ages, experiences and circumstances.

For example, a discussion about sensory overwhelm might focus on a busy classroom in a school, a crowded group activity in a youth organisation, or managing unfamiliar environments in a care setting. The underlying principle remains the same: helping young people recognise individual difference and consider what meaningful support and inclusion can look like.

Neuro-diversity UK welcomes enquiries about how the programme could be adapted to suit different organisations, while considering accessibility, safeguarding and the needs of the young people involved.

From Understanding to Everyday Action

Sometimes a small change in understanding can

make a significant difference.

Imagine a young person who needs extra time to process a question before answering.

In a classroom, youth-group activity or care setting, that pause might be mistaken for uncertainty, distraction or unwillingness to participate. But a different response can change the experience.

Allowing thinking time, explaining information clearly and checking understanding without  embarrassment may help that young person feel more confident and included. The Neuro-diversity Crew™ uses everyday situations like this to encourage more thoughtful responses.

The aim is not to make assumptions about anyone's diagnosis or needs. It is to encourage young people and the adults supporting them to ask better questions, listen carefully and recognise that different people may need different approaches.

Understanding matters most when it influences how we treat one another.
