The Neuro-diversity Crew™

Different Brains, Brilliant Minds

Amara, Freya, Milo and Oscar, four illustrated teenage characters standing together in colourful hoodies against a rainbow background.

Understanding different experiences. Building more inclusive school communities.

The Neuro-diversity Crew™ is a character-led neurodiversity education programme developed by Neuro-diversity UK for young people in secondary schools, sixth forms and colleges.

Through four fictional teenage characters, Milo, Amara, Freya and Oscar, the programme encourages pupils to explore what neurodivergence can mean in everyday life.

Rather than concentrating solely on diagnoses and definitions, the characters share relatable stories about learning, friendships, communication, sensory experiences and the challenges that other people may not always recognise.

The aim is to help young people look beyond assumptions, understand different perspectives and consider how their own actions can help others feel included, respected and valued.

The Neuro-diversity Crew™

Four Characters. Different Experiences. Important Conversations.

Milo, an illustrated teenage boy with short dark curly hair, wearing a blue Neuro-diversity UK hoodie, jeans and trainers.

Milo | Autism and Dyslexia

“I do not need fixing. I need understanding.”

Milo helps pupils explore how autism and dyslexia can affect everyday school experiences, including reading, communication, sensory environments and the time needed to process information.

Through Milo's stories, pupils learn why clear instructions, predictable routines, accessible learning materials and patience can make a meaningful difference.

Amara, an illustrated teenage girl with dark curly hair tied up in a high ponytail, wearing a purple Neuro-diversity UK hoodie, jeans and tr

Amara | ADHD and Dyscalculia

“My brain is full of ideas and I need the right tools to shine.”

Amara explores experiences associated with ADHD and dyscalculia, including attention, movement, working memory, mathematical understanding and emotional regulation.

Her stories challenge assumptions about concentration and behaviour, showing why movement, practical learning tools and supportive reminders can be helpful.

Freya, an illustrated teenage girl with long blonde curly hair tied up in a ponytail, wearing a pink Neuro-diversity UK hoodie, jeans and tr

Freya | Autism and ADHD

“I might look okay, but feel overwhelmed inside.”

Freya helps pupils understand how being autistic and having ADHD can create experiences that are not always visible to others.

Her stories explore masking, sensory overwhelm, social exhaustion and the sometimes competing needs for structure, flexibility, movement and quiet time.

Freya encourages pupils to recognise that someone who appears to be coping may still need understanding and support.

Oscar, an illustrated teenage boy with short red hair and blue eyes, wearing a green Neuro-diversity UK hoodie, jeans and trainers.

Oscar | Dyspraxia and SLCD

“I am capable, even when things take longer.”

Oscar explores how coordination, organisation, handwriting and communication differences can affect everyday school life.

Through his experiences, pupils learn why  different ways of demonstrating learning can help someone participate with greater confidence.

Oscar's message reminds pupils that taking longer to complete a task or express an idea does not mean someone has less to contribute.

Beyond the Labels

Understanding the person, not simply the diagnosis.

Neurodivergence cannot be explained through a single experience, and no two neurodivergent people are exactly alike.

The Neuro-diversity Crew™ recognises this individuality. Each character offers one perspective that helps pupils explore how school environments, expectations and social interactions can affect people differently.

The programme encourages young people to consider what might be happening beneath the surface of everyday situations.

Why might someone need more time to answer? Why can a busy classroom feel overwhelming? Why might handwriting or following spoken instructions require considerable effort? How can something as simple as giving someone time, explaining a task clearly or respecting their need for space help them feel included?

By exploring these questions, pupils are encouraged to move beyond labels and develop a more thoughtful understanding of the people around them.

Learning That Encourages Action

Watch. Discuss. Reflect. Act.

The Neuro-diversity Crew™ is designed to encourage active learning rather than passive viewing.

The character-led videos provide opportunities for pupils to explore different experiences, while discussion questions and reflective activities help them consider what they have learned.

The programme focuses on three important areas:

1. Understanding experiences

Helping pupils recognise how neurodivergence may affect learning, communication, emotions, sensory experiences and everyday school life.

2. Recognising helpful support

Exploring how teachers and other adults can make learning environments more accessible through clear communication, flexibility and practical adjustments.

3. Encouraging peer inclusion

Helping classmates understand the importance of patience, respect, kindness and including others without making assumptions or singling anyone out.

The emphasis is on realistic actions that contribute to a more understanding school community.

Supporting Neurodiversity Education in Schools and Colleges

Different Brains, Brilliant Minds

The Neuro-diversity Crew™ has been developed with the needs of secondary schools, sixth forms and colleges in mind.

Its character-led videos and associated learning activities are designed to support conversations about neurodivergence in a range of educational contexts.

These include assemblies, PSHE, tutor time, inclusion activities, pupil workshops and classroom discussion.

The programme also provides opportunities to connect pupil learning with wider conversations about inclusive teaching practice, accessibility and belonging.
